Living Andalusia II: En Ethnographic Perspective/Vivir Andalucía II: Una Perspectiva Etnográfica
Cultural rites are celebrated in the southern part of Spain as a maximum manifestation of social cohesion, community spirit, and integration. They create a sense of place, identity, and belonging. Food, beverage, music, dance, dress, and language come together in expressions of high culture, popular culture, religious and even political culture. This class will study the ethnographic origins and current versions of popular culture in the south during the time of year when significant festivals take place.
Seminar on Exploring Roman Spain/Explorando la España Romana
Students will learn about, visit, and conduct research based on the vestiges of Roman life in the region of what was known as Hispania Bética. Includes visits to Ategua, Itálica, Torreparedones, Mérida, Almedinilla, Córdoba.
Migration, Human Rights, and Identity/Movimientos Migratorios, Derechos Humanos e Identidad
In this course three main factors will serve to analyze migratory movements in Spain. First, human rights along with the mechanisms used in Spain and Europe to guarantee migratory rights. Second, contemporary migratory movements, their origins and the impact on public policy and collective perception. Third, the construct of “the other” in Spanish society from the perspective of ethnicity, cultural diversity, and the significance of race.Includes conferences and interaction with activists, NGOs and personal migratory experiences.
Communicating Complex Meanings in Spanish/Comunicar Significados Complejos en Español
This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to deepen knowledge of the Spanish language through understanding structural and communicative nuances. Verb tenses (all forms of the subjunctive and the indicative) and their use in communication will be the main focus of the class. Students will also learn strategies such as circumlocution, paraphrasing, and asking for clarification in order to confidently manage any and all situations.
Andalusian Art: Universal and Unique/ Arte Andaluz: Universal y Único
In the region of Andalusia, artistic monuments and works display characteristics of diverse cultural influences as a result of the peoples who inhabited the territory. In this class, students will learn about the Andalusian variety of Late Romanesque (or Proto-Gothic) works through the very interesting Andalusian Baroque era. Frequent visits to monuments in the region and to museums and religious temples that display art in all forms.
In this class students will examine the relationship between literary works and cinema from the particular view of the adaptation process, or interdiscursivity that leads to written works in their film version. Students will learn about both types of expression; literary and cinematographic, as well as the mechanics and resources employed to create film. A study of works from contemporary times along with the adaptation process, thematic conflicts, and characteristics of form will be the object of class discussion.
